Elena Velasco

Theater Teacher

Elena Velasco (she/ella) is a multidisciplinary theatre artist serving DC and Greater Boston, whose work encompasses performance, activism and community engagement. Through wellness-centered and collective processes. Directing/Choreography Credits: Convergence Theatre (Founding Artistic Director), GALA Hispanic, 1st Stage, Synetic Theater, Keegan Theatre, NextStop Theatre (Helen Hayes nominations), Adventure Theatre, Arts on the Horizon (Helen Hayes nomination), Kennedy Center’s New Visions/New Voices, and Central Square Theatre (Boston). A commissioned playwright and researcher, she has written for Routledge, Intellect Books, and several TYA musicals and has served on panels for Boston Conservatory, George Mason University, and Theatre Washington.

Her yogic training and DEI experience informs her culturally responsive processes, practices she has shared as a consultant for organizations such as the Southeastern Theatre Conference, Women’s Theatre Festival, and TheatreWashington. Her professional and academic work garnered the 2024 University Systems of Maryland Board of Regents Excellence in Creativity Award, and she was named the 2023 recipient of the Stage Director and Choreographer Foundation’s Barbara Whitman Award (union). She is on the theater faculty at Bowie State University. Most importantly, she is the proud mother of seven children, all who have varied paths and passions.
